My First Luggage Set
In all my years growing up, any time we traveled as a family or I went anywhere on my own, we always used mom and dad's mix and match luggage that they'd acquired over the years. There were bags in all colors, styles and sizes, ancient and just old. That was luggage; luggage as I knew it, anyway.
A few days before I headed off to college out of state, my parents took me into the dining room. On the floor there was a brand new suitcase. It was black with brown trim. It looked awesome. It was large. Mom opened it up and – lo and behold, what was inside? Another suitcase! Just like the first one, only smaller!
Upon opening that one there was a third suitcase, the smallest of all in the matching set. This reminded me a little of the days as a little girl when money was tight and a birthday present might be something as exciting as a pack of gum so my mom made opening the present part of the fun by wrapping that pack of gum in boxes progressively larger until there was a box approximately the size of a television for you to open (only to open box after box and find. . . a pack of gum. I don't remember ever feeling disappointed, though. My own pack of gum!!).
Wow! A luggage set!! I don't think I'd ever seen one of those! And this one was mine! Happy Day! Packing my things had never been so fun, and this time I was packing almost ALL of my things, and had plenty of room to do it! I loved it!
Since those days I've done a lot of traveling and have seen countless luggage sets. I have witnessed the evolution of rolling luggage. I have seen the trend swing from black or navy blue luggage to brighter colors and some with bold patterns.
Things sure have changed for me since my younger days. I wouldn't think of traveling with two bags that didn't match. We always own at least one luggage set. And instead of suitcases with those four microscopic wheels on the bottom that never know which direction to go, ours are on rollers with pull out handles. Not sure they even sell the other kind anymore.
The anticipation of a vacation or trip is half the fun of it. Packing your luggage, organizing it so you'll remember where everything is, and putting it by the door is when you truly feel you're on your way. And every trip is an adventure. And we all know you should take your luggage on your adventures with you.
